GenerateOne Launches MyMailProtect

Spam and virus protection becomes world’s first “DonationWare” security service

Innovative solution for single users and small businesses

Newcastle, UK, August 11th, 2005 GenerateOne Ltd, an innovative UK software developer is to launch a new online application based service to provide Anti-Virus and Spam protection based on a donation-ware concept to help protect single users and small businesses.

“Anti virus and spam filtering is almost obligatory for all computer users these days,” explains Mr Robin Harris , Product Manager of  GenerateOne Ltd, “…and we felt that a donation based service would offer a real benefit to single users or small businesses that don’t have a resident IT expert on hand to manage these types of applications.”

“The project evolved from our work with the CLAM Anti virus GPL project and commercial work in creating spam filtering for a client and we believe this is the first ever security web service to be offered as a donationware concept.” Adds Mr Harris

mymailprotect.com uses Clam AntiVirus, a toolkit created and maintained by the open source community and currently used by thousands of ISP’s and educational establishments such as The University of Queensland, The University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrucken and The Loyola University Chicago.

The SPAM filter was created by GenerateOne and uses Bayesian filtering and challenge response protection to effectively learn the habits of users so that messages that are spam for one user are not necessarily blocked for another user.

Both the Anti Virus and SPAM filtering services are available for any POP3 email account and can be configured for outbound email scanning. “There is no fixed fee for the use of the service and we will rely on donations from satisfied users for the immediate future. We will bear the cost of maintaining servers and bandwidth but if a huge number of people sign up for the service and performance is negatively affected – we may restrict the number of active users.” Harris concludes.

Feedback from test users of the service has been very positive, as Aaron Kernaghan, Sales Director comments, “I have used Mymailprotect.com for several weeks so far and it has blocked about 98% of the spam that would normally plague my inbox and detected and cleaned two emails that had viruses within attachments.”

Mymailprotect.com is the first of a number of innovative web services under development at GenerateOne and will officially launch on September 1st.
